Tour overview
We invite you to one of the most striking experiences in the Andes: our visit to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). We operate this full-day tour from Cusco, with private transport and a trail guide, so you can see the bands of natural color that appear at nearly 5,000 meters. It is a demanding route of high landscapes and thin air, designed for people who want authentic Andean nature and views that stay with you.

Itinerary
Morning – Transfer and climb
We start very early with pickup at your hotel or an agreed point in Cusco. We travel in private transport toward the southeast, crossing the valley and climbing gradually toward the Culque and Pitumarca area. Along the way the landscape changes: high grasslands, hills, and Andean communities open up. Before the hike we make a short stop to acclimatize, have a light snack if it applies, and hear our trail guide’s instructions on pace, altitude, and looking after yourself.
From the trailhead we start the climb toward Vinicunca. The walk is gradual but demanding because of the altitude; the air is thin and the morning cold usually stays with us. We move with pauses to drink water and to look at the geological formations that appear as we gain elevation. Our trail guide sets the pace and stays with you the whole way until we reach the main viewpoint of Rainbow Mountain.
Afternoon – Summit and return to Cusco
At the top, close to 5,000 meters, we take the time we need to look at the bands of mineral color, take photographs, and feel the scale of the range. It is the most special moment of the day: the contrast between the sky, the neighboring mountains, and Vinicunca’s natural palette. We then start down the same trail, more comfortably than the climb, to the meeting point with our vehicle.
On the way back we drive toward Cusco. The return lets you rest, share impressions, and, if the weather allows, enjoy the last light over the Andes. We reach the city in the late afternoon or evening and drop you at your hotel or the agreed point. That is how we close our Rainbow Mountain tour: an intense, memorable day, fully operated by Magone Viajes.
Recommendations
- Acclimatize in Cusco for at least 1–2 days beforehand.
- Wear layers, a windbreaker, gloves, and a hat: the cold at the summit is intense.
- Use trekking shoes with good grip.
- Drink plenty of water and bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and snacks.
- Walk at your own pace; the altitude does not forgive if you push too hard.
- Tell us about any relevant health condition before we leave.

Frequently asked questions
How hard is the trek?
It is medium to hard mainly because of the altitude (~5,000 m), not so much because of the distance. We recommend being in good shape and, if possible, spending a day or two acclimatizing in Cusco first.
What time do we leave and return?
We leave Cusco very early and return at dusk or early evening. We confirm the exact times with you when you book.
Do I need an entrance ticket?
Yes. Entrance to the Vinicunca area is not included. Confirm the current procedure and local costs with us before your trip.
Can I use a horse for the climb?
Horses or mules are often available in the area, paid by the traveler. We do not include them; if you want one, we can point you in the right direction when we arrive.
